7 Day Golden Triangle Discovery

As far as classic travel triangles are concerned, India’s version of combining Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is a hard act to follow. It’s a trip that provides a colorful and exciting introduction to the rich tapestry of the country’s history, vibrant culture, and magnificent architecture.

Delhi is not only the capital of modern India, but the capital of at least seven previous civilizations, each of which has left behind a trail of monuments. Amazingly, the past and the present have found a way to happily co-exist. The heart of Old Delhi is a 400-year old tangle of lanes with colorful bazaars, complemented by vibrant temples, the towering minaret of Qutab Minar, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort.

The journey continues to Agra and the Taj Mahal. A stunning monument to love, the Taj Mahal, an exquisite example of Mughal architecture, has captivated the hearts and minds of travelers for centuries. Crafted entirely from white marble, construction of the Taj began the year after the Emperor Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died in childbirth in 1631. The memorial was not completed until 1653 and over 20,000 people from India and other parts of Asia were engaged in its construction. Enjoy the beautiful gardens, laid out in the classical Persian design and the elaborately embellished arches and other structures.

On your way to Jaipur, stop at the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, once the imperial capital of the Mughal dynasty. Marvel at its architectural grandeur which combines an interesting blend of Mughal and Hindu styles.

Your classic Indian triangle is complete once you and your private guide reach Jaipur. A tour through the city reveals why it is called the pink city as, virtually, every building within the historic center is painted a terracotta pink. This adds to the riot of colors displayed by the flower markets, turban stalls, brightly painted careering buses and trucks, and even the elephants. A visit to the City Palace displays a striking mix of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, and the view from its roof terrace over the cascading rooftops and the giant sundial next door are amazing. The number one attraction, of course, is the Amber Fort, a breathtaking construction of red sandstone and marble. Viewed from a distance, the sand-colored walls literally appear to fade into the surrounding hills.
